On the path of continuous learning
In honor of Black History Month, and certainly on the heels of the murder of Tyre Nichols, we continue to explore our steps toward courageous action in advancing social justice and equity in our work, our relationships, and in our communities.
This is a gentle reminder, a calling in - to us as well - to continue our inquiry and actions towards diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). Here are some questions that we continue to use to help hold ourselves curious and accountable in this practice and to adjust accordingly:
What efforts have I/we been making to advance our own knowledge and skill set? (And not on the backs or emotional labor of those who have been prejudiced against)?
Are we using not just our minds but also our spirit and bodies to be proximate?
What will our next work in our anti-racist work look like for us? For me? For our organization?
For the sake of what do we lean into these hard conversations or actions? (Hint: human dignity).
How can this be aligned with my/the organization’s values?
Where is my discomfort holding me back to call out or call in?
Who can hold me accountable for forward actions, even (or especially!) when it’s hard?
When I’m/we’re called out or called in - what is my/our reaction? Am I/are we reacting defensively? If so, how can I/we be curious about that?
When it might feel more comfortable and easier to tap out of hard conversations - am I leaning in? Are we being curious to learn more?
Where am I talking when I should be listening?
Where did I/we have an invitation to take action and did not? What would I/we do differently going forward?
