What Adventures Await You in 2024?

How do you define adventure? How does adventure show up in your life and career?

We suspect that the definition - and feelings about - adventure vary from person to person, and may shift over a lifetime. For some folks, adventure may mean rock climbing large mountains and testing physical limits, or jumping headfirst into entrepreneurship (an adventure like no other!). For others, adventure may be smaller steps towards trying a new restaurant, pitching an innovative idea to the CEO, or starting a new career.

Why do we need adventure? Adventure helps awaken our curiosity and expand our comfort zone. It allows us to adapt, evolve, and grow, broadening our perspective. And with anything new, it can involve discomfort and risk. Yet as we know - we can have courage or comfort, but we cannot have both.

Sometimes the grand adventures can seem overwhelming, and daunting. Enter the concept of microadventures. This can be defined as an experience that is small, short, and accessible. It might stand on its own or contribute to a larger goal. While originally tied to travel, we believe we can leverage this concept to apply to microadventures more generally in life, career, and leadership.

Consider an area of your life - personal or professional - in which you would like to be more courageous and adventurous this year. Consider these questions:

  1. Define adventure and courage for you. If you knew you couldn’t fail - what would you do?

  2. What are the success measures of the item you are contemplating? How do you know when you’ve got there?

  3. How would it feel to NOT do what you are considering?

  4. What’s holding you back?

  5. What’s one small step you can make towards moving towards that desire?
